I decided I really wanted a blue coat for jumping. Don’t ask me why, just go along with it. Riding Warehouse had a deal on the fancy new AA Horseware Motionlite, but you had to wait for them to send it, and in the meantime I discovered the Kerrits Competitor Coat in Jade and Storm and ordered that. They all arrived at the same time, and the showdown began! I get nothing for reviewing these, and I paid with my own money. I just had a good time doing this.
I threw them on the dress form for the photos (Yes, I own a dress form. I studied costuming for a while.) and here are my observations:
First of all, there is a large price difference between the two jackets, with a Motionlite coming in at $249 and the Kerrits coming in at $129. Why is this? I imagine the fabric the Motionlite is made of is not cheap and the construction of a double-layer jacket isn’t easy either. There’s also details like how the internal seams are done. The Motionlite has finished seams, the Kerrits is only serged. (you can click the pictures to make them larger.
Both jackets have the zipper underneath the buttons, which might be the greatest improvement to jackets of all time IMNHO.
Other details of interest are 1) the texture of the Motionlite, and 2) the Kerrits logo and 3) the collar embellishment.
There were some surprises! You can easily change the buttons on the Motionlite, which is cool, but it DOESN’T have a pocket large enough for a cell phone. 🙁
So for me the decisions was: I wanted pockets, I didn’t think I could keep shavings out of the texture of the Motionlite, and I the Kerrits is priced well.
